What are Sustainable Salons?
Sustainable Salons is a comprehensive resource recovery program serving salons across Australia and New Zealand. The organisation collects up to 95% of salon waste and redirects materials for reuse, recycling or repurposing. Some of the initiatives include recycling hair, metals, paper, plastics, chemicals, glass and even razors and tools.
Beyond environmental efforts, Sustainable Salons contributes to the community by donating ponytails for medical wigs and supports organisations like OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest to provide meals for those in need.
Earth to Betty and Sustainable Salons
As one of the early adopters of the Sustainable Salons program, Earth to Betty has been at the forefront of sustainable practices in the hairdressing industry. Our collaboration with Sustainable Salons allows us to:
Recycle Hair Clippings: Collected hair clippings are repurposed into hair booms to help clean up oil spills, turning what would be waste into a valuable environmental resource.
Donate Ponytails: We collect and donate ponytails to create medical wigs for individuals experiencing hair loss due to conditions like cancer or alopecia, providing both environmental and social benefits.
Recycling Metals and Plastics: All our used foils, colour tubes, and other metals are recycled, reducing landfill waste. Plastics are also collected and repurposed, contributing to a circular economy.
Proper Chemical Disposal: Leftover chemicals are safely collected and disposed of, preventing harmful substances from entering waterways and ensuring environmental safety.
Supporting Community Programs: Through our partnership, we contribute to programs that provide meals to those in need, reinforcing our commitment to social responsibility.
